It’s February, and you know what that means - our initial burst of New Year’s motivation may be dwindling (I know mine is!), and even the simplest daily tasks can feel like you’re climbing Mount Everest.
In January, we often feel invincible. We’re tackling gym sessions, healthy eating habits, sticking to our bedtime routines, and checking off tasks effortlessly. But then, inevitably, a day comes when we just can’t muster up the energy. As time goes on, this feeling seems to intensify until we hit a slump, empathizing with those who abandon New Year’s resolutions. Even minor tasks become daunting, sucking out every ounce of energy and focus that we have.
BUT - it’s exactly during these challenging times that perseverance is paramount.
In this post, we’ll explore five (in my opinion!) effective strategies for navigating periods when motivation seems non-existent. So let’s get into it!:
SET SMALL, ACHIEVABLE GOALS.
No brainer, right? When you’re faced with low motivation, the idea of tackling huge projects feel SO overwhelming, so instead just break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. When you set achievable goals, you then make progress gradually, boosting your confidence and motivation along the way. Celebrate each and every small victory, no matter how insignificant it may seem.
ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE.
When you have a routine, it provides structure and consistency to your day, which makes it that much easier to stay on track even when motivation wanes. So create a daily schedule that includes dedicated times for certain activities, such as exercise, work, relaxation, studying, self-care, etc. When you stick to a routine, you’ll develop habits that can help you push through periods of low motivation much more effectively.
FIND YOUR WAY.
Find out the underlying reasons for pursuing your goals. What inspired you to start your journey? Whether that be going to the gym, eating healthy, starting a new hobby…why did you embark on this journey in the first place? Whether it’s achieving personal growth, making a difference, or fulfilling a lifelong dream, remind yourself of your why - when you do that, you can potentially reignite your passion and drive. Visualize your end goal as well and let it fuel your determination to push through your obstacles.
EMBRACE IMPERFECTION.
Perfectionism can be a huge roadblock when motivation is low - so instead of striving for flawless results, give yourself permission to embrace imperfection. Accept setbacks and mistakes and learn that they are a natural part of the process. Focus instead on progress instead of perfection, and remember that taking imperfect action is way better than taking no action at all.
SUPPORT.
Don’t be afraid to reach out for support when your motivation is lagging. Accountabil-a-buddies (I know that’s not a word!! LOL) are a great way to push through those lulls or even seek advice from a mentor or just straight up sharing struggles with a friend (who can maybe even relate and then accountabil-a-buddies are born!). Surrounding yourself with supportive people can be encouraging and provide motivation. Remember that you’re not alone in facing challenges, and there’s strength in seeking help when needed.
So…all in all, low motivation is a common hurdle on the journey to achieving our goals but if we implement healthy strategies, setting small achievable goals, establishing a routine, finding our way, embracing imperfection, and seeking support - you can effectively push through your challenging moments and continue making progress.
Remember that success really isn’t determined by the absence of obstacles but our ability to overcome them.
Keep pushing forward, even when motivation feels low, and you’ll be one step closer to achieving all that you want.
